LA MIRADA THEATRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
AND MCCOY RIGBY ANNOUNCE 2005/2006 SEASON
LA MIRADA, Calif., June 3, 2005 -- The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts announces its 2005-2006 season of Broadway musicals, plays and special events, produced for the 12th year by McCoy Rigby Entertainment. The new season kicks off in September of this year with "The Foreigner," followed in November with "Sister's Christmas Catechism." In January of next year the season continues with "Over the River and Through the Woods," followed in March by "Swing!" in April with two nights of the world famous "Count Basie Orchestra," and concluding in June with "Johnny Guitar, The Musical."
"The Foreigner," winner of two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production, is an inspired comic romp --based on what the NY Post describes as a "devilishly clever idea" -- that demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters in a small, rural fishing lodge, must deal with a stranger who they believe knows no English. "I laughed start to finish at one comic surprise after another," said The New Yorker. "The Foreigner," written by the late Larry Shue, opens at La Mirada September 30.
"Sister's Christmas Catechism," which has its LA premiere at La Mirada November 4, delivers a sleigh load of side-splitting holiday laughs as Sister tackles "whatever happened to the Magi's gold" through a forensic examination of the nativity scene. Written and produced by Maripat Donovan with Marc Silvia and Jane Morris, the show stars Donovan reprising the sister of "Late Nite Catechism" fame.
"Over the River and Through the Woods," which opens January 27, 2006, is a new comedy from Joe DiPietro who penned "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change." Nick, a young, single Italian-American from New Jersey, announces his out-of-town promotion to both sets of his grandparents, whom he visits for dinner every Sunday. As the grandparents cook, conspire and cajole to get him to stay, Nick gets to know and love them even more.
"Swing!" which opens March 31, is a six-time Tony-nominated musical that jumps and jives, featuring such classic swing tunes as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Jumpin' At The Woodside," "Stompin' At The Savoy," "It Don't Mean A Thing If You Ain't Got That Swing," and "Sing, Sing, Sing." Originally conceived by Paul Kelly, "Swing!" is described by the NY Post as "a sure winner."
Two performances on April 29 of the world famous "Count Basie Orchestra" are directed by Bill Hughes and feature drummer Butch Miles. The Basie Orchestra, known for Kansas City style swing, is one of the most thriving big bands in history, with 17 GRAMMY¨ and two GRAMMY¨ Hall of Fame Awards. Today, the Basie band is bringing generations of swing fans together as never before.
The season concludes with "Johnny Guitar, The Musical" the Outer Critics Circle "Best Off-Broadway Musical of 2004," opening at La Mirada June 2. Using a mix of '50s rock, doo-wop and steamy ballads, "Johnny Guitar, The Musical" is a tuneful, laugh-filled musical comedy that embraces and sends up '50s-style movie acting, melodramatic romance, and rough-and-tumble cowboy action. This tempestuous tale of a sultry saloonkeeper and a jealous tycoon is based on the cult film favorite starring Joan Crawford.
La Mirada Theatre Executive Director Jeff Brown said, "This 12th edition of the McCoy Rigby Series is a great mix of entertainment for all ages. From the 'Best Off Broadway Musical of 2004' 'Johnny Guitar' to the LA Premiere of 'Sister's Christmas Catechism,' Cathy Rigby and Tom McCoy continue to serve up an eclectic season of plays, comedies and musicals the quality of which is second to none."
Each production, with the exception of "Count Basie Orchestra," runs for nineteen performances during a two and one-half week period. Single tickets for the musicals and plays are $40 and $32. Senior, student and group prices are also available. A five-show season subscription is $70 to $140 and entitles the subscriber to further discounts on individual shows and special events. Tickets for "Count Basie Orchestra" are $40 to $65. For more information, visit the web site at www.lamiradatheatre.com or call the theatre box office at (562) 944-9801 or (714) 994-6310.
